XVW Viewing Windows - Safer Visual Inspections

XVW WindowOpening energized electrical equipment is forbidden, with few exceptions, by electrical safety standards like NFPA 70E and CSA Z462. When open-panel work is permitted, workers must utilize restrictive work practices and PPE.

Exiscan™ XV series inspection windows are an easy way to enable closed-panel visual access in compliance with the standards.

The resulting work process is far safer, more efficient and de-risked.

Use Exiscan™ Visual Inspection Windows to allow operators, electricians and engineers the ability to:

  • Inspect for indications of equipment conditions
  • View critical meters or indicators
  • Take digital images of components for work orders
  • Verify full disengagement of blades when deenergizing

Establishing an Electrically Safe Work Condition
One of the steps to "achieving an electrically safe work condition," per NFPA 70E-2012 Article 120.1(3), states: “whenever possible, visually verify that all blades of the disconnecting devices are fully open…” A similar clause appears in the Canadian CSA Z462 standard. The Exiscan™ XV Inspection Windows provide visibility to workers to perform such a check prior to opening equipment.

Quick & Easy Installation:

The XVW Inspection Windows require a one-time modification to the enclosure. A qualified person simply cuts a Need Exact Dimensions Here opening and drills 10 pilot holes in the panel or door.

The rectangular opening gives users the latitude to either use a knockout punch, saw, cutoff wheel or nibbler. Properly equipped, a team of two technicians can install five to eight windows an hour.

Why XVW Viewing Windows?

green bullet square

MadeInAmericaCompliance: Install an XVW Visual Inspection Window  so staff can keep the enclosures closed when they:

  • Visually verify that blades are disengaged (for LOTO)
  • Check for evidence of corona, dust ingress, rodents, etc.
  • Read meters or indicators inside control panels

Performing typical visual tasks through a viewing window maintains equipment in an enclosed and guarded state. As such, the de-risked work task is not inherently hazard-inducing, and can be performed in compliance with standards like NFPA 70E and CSA Z462, without the need for elevated levels of PPE.

green bullet square Efficiency: Stop wasting time opening enclosures and complying with restrictive work tasks that require donning elevated levels of PPE. The time saved just peaking through a window will more than justify the minimal costs of installation.

green bullet square See Inside "Dangerous" Applications: Is dust beginning to collect on the conductors of your high-calorie switchgear or drive? That dust can lead to tracking and a breakdown in the insulation, leading, ultimately, to an arc event. Keep an eye on equipment that your recent incident energy analysis labeled "Dangerous" and can no longer be opened due to high calorie values.

green bullet square De-Risk Tasks: Open-panel inspections are, by their nature, high risk because they introduce a host of potential variables: stirring dust, agitating a conductor or misplaced tool, scaring a rodent, possibly dropping parts into the enclosure, etc. Visual Inspection Windows maintain an enclosed and guarded state (per the standards) and remove the high-risk work tasks, thereby reducing the risk associated with open-panel inspections. Facility managers can take comfort in knowing that the new closed-panel is de-risking their inspection process.
